Tech-Savvy Marketer Lands Job in Two Weeks

Tech-Savvy Marketer Lands Job in Two WeeksTech-Savvy Marketer Lands Job in Two WeeksMarketers in-demand skills make for a brief search. Co-founder of Colorado-based branding firm finds director position with greater growth possibilities in Dallas, Texas.David P. Warren, of Littleton, Colo., began his career as an artist. He earned a bachelors degree in graphic plan and worked as an artist. He welches the third employee after the founding of BrandSavvy, a small brand consultancy firm, near his home, where he served as director if digital media. As his job evolved into a Web design specialty, he added technical skills, teaching himself programming languages to design and build web applications. When the job demanded he understand business, he returned to school and earned an MBA. He sat in board meetings with clients until he felt he had the experience to perform as a business leader on his own.At that point Warren considered himself experienced in three separate disciplines graphic de sign, technology and business. At the same time, the market welches shifting. Employers no longer sought single-track employees to manage segmented aspects of Web absatzwirtschaft. Companies that want to thrive in a new Web 2.0 economy werent hiring Web masters who only focused on technical know-how and lacked marketing knowledge, Warren said. They need them to understand marketing from a consumers point of view while leveraging the technology available to draw and retain savvy Web customers. What Ive seen is a lot of need for a cross between a marketing person and a technology person. Companies have finally figured out that the Web sites are the front lines of marketing efforts and if they want to be successful they must understand this, he said.Warren was poised to take advantage of his three-track career and the market shift just as circumstance and geography made it necessary to do so.Limited growthWarren had experience in graphic design, technology and business, but at BrandSavvy his role was fairly limited. He wanted to make use of his technology, marketing and business skills and the economy was making it difficult for advertising, marketing and brand consultancy firms to find new business. The end game at a consultancy is having your own firm, he said. I couldnt and didnt want to do that, so it was time to leverage both my new and existing skill sets and see what else was out there.A fast-tracked job searchWarrens triple punch arsenal graphic design, technology and business skills turned out to be a hit. The MktgLadder member had two interviews in two weeks before he accepted an offer as technology marketing manager at Dal-Tile, the largest manufacturer of tile in the U.S.He had already made up his mind that he needed to leave Colorado where he saw limited opportunity for his talents, so it was no problem when he was approached by two companies outside the state. One catalog-based company was looking to shift 75 percent of its business to the Web in the n ext three years. The job was a fit, but Warren feared advancement at the company would be limited once the project was complete.Dal Tile was a different story. The company, a subsidiary of Mohawk Industries, was based in Dallas, his wifes hometown, and Dal Tile was making a long term commitment to Web marketing, he said. After two phone interviews on a Tuesday and Wednesday, Warren flew to Dallas for an onsite interview on a Thursday and had an offer of employment by the following Monday, he said.Warren will oversee eight product-marketing Web sites and all electronic marketing campaigns for Dal-Tile, a role that takes advantage of all three of his skill sets. He said the team hell head will also be tasked with the support and maintenance for Dal-Tiles online marketing applications. So, at 35 years old, Warren is poised for a move to Dallas, a new role and what he believes will be an extraordinarily fulfilling career that takes advantage of all hes learned and done in previous marketi ng and technology jobs. This kind of melding between technology and business is the future, he said. Im so thrilled that I can be part of that.

How to Master the Phone Screening

How to Master the Phone ScreeningHow to Master the Phone ScreeningThe phone screening is a part of the interview process that can loosely be called the first round of job interviews. At times, an online application leads to a phone screening invitation. Other times, recruiters may get on a phone to screen a job candidate for opportunities they have on their plate. In general, phone screenings are used to make koranvers the job candidate should be called for an in-person job interview. Read how to master the phone screening. Make sure you are always asked to have an in-person job interview1. Make sure you are in the right placeWe live in a world where our phones are with us at all times. It does not give you, the job candidate, permission to treat the phone screening like it is just a distraction from your daily routine. What does this mean? It meansDo not do phone screenings while driving, waiting in line at a restaurant, or getting your haircut.Give the phone screening 100% attention in a nice quiet place without distracting hintergrund noises.Doing this will also help your demeanor during the call. You will sound relaxed, and the interviewer will appreciate you making this phone call a 1 priority.2. Make sure the connection is perfectPhones services are still imperfect. People lose signals while talking on the phone. If you know your cell phone typically has problems, go to a more reliable phone for the call. Try using a landline if you do not trust your cell service.3. Have your resume out in front of you and take notesThey will be asking questions about your resume. It only makes sense that you have your resume in front of you for the phone screening.Take notes during the interview, too. If this phone screening turns into an in-person interview, you will have plenty of notes to look over and questions to ask. It will surely make you look well-prepared for the job interview with an employer.4. Be an amazing listenerThe phone screening is happening to find out if they should bring you in. Let them ask you interview questions. Give them the answers they asked for, and you encourage them to call you in.It is not the time to tell boring stories or hammer the interviewer over the head with your knowledge. Use hints that show you are listening. For exampleOkayInterestingI seeNo rants or speeches are necessary. Keep it simple and just listen for when to respond. Say nothing more than what they need to hear.5. Nail down the verstndigung im strafverfahren breaker interview questionsQuestions like these are designed to eliminate you from the hiring processWhy do you want to work here? What are your greatest weaknesses? What are your salary expectations? They want to see if you answer aligned with what they are looking for, or in some cases if they can afford you. Each of these job interview questions helps employers find out on the phone if interviewing you further is a waste of time.6. Avoid verbal pauses and upspeakYou may use them all the time in your daily life. But during a phone interview verbal pauses can either put an employer to sleep or make the employer think you are ill-prepared for the phone screening.Over-usage of these verbal pauses include the followingYou know likeActuallyBasicallyUmmmUhhhhUpspeak is a way of talking in which every spoken sentence has the same vocal pitches of someone asking a question. For exampleI worked at this company for five years? And I have lots of job skills?Speaking this way can be viewed as a sign someone is not confident or lacks professional experience.7. Express appreciation and platzdeckchen up the next stepsSimply put, let the interviewer know you appreciate the phone call. Then, ask what steps are required to meet in-person. Even if you bombed the phone screening, asking about the next steps may lead to an employer calling you infor a job interview. Try this outI appreciate your time today on the call. Perhaps we can set up a time to meet in-person?If the employer declines whil e on the phone, there is nothing you can do about it. However, if they set up a time and date, it will be your chance to make up for the failed phone screening. They may just bring you in because you had a positive mindset on the phone and they want to know more about you

Exciting Times at ASME

Exciting Times at ASME Exciting Times at ASME Exciting Times at ASMEAs ASME brings fiscal year 2013 to a close, a variety of activities and initiatives have set the Society on a course to address future challenges with optimism and growth as one of the worlds leading engineering organizations. ASMEs initiatives continue with a strategic focus on energy, workforce development and global outreach. Events held in conjunction with the ASME Annual Meeting, held June 21-26 in Indianapolis, included a Member Assembly that highlighted the ASME Energy Forum, a year-long multimedia series on ASME.org, as well as a panel discussion and video focusing on RD trends in emerging energy sectors. ASMEs role as a resource and leading policy advocate for technically sound energy policies continues to gain momentum and is well positioned to address the issues facing the worlds energy future. Dr. Wayne Clough, secretary at The Smithsonian Institution, discussed the importance of scientific literacy at the Ralph Coats Roe Luncheon Lecture brde month at the ASME Annual Meeting in Indianapolis. During his talk, he stressed the importance of bringing science back into the public consciousness. Too many daunting global issues are at stake, he said. With the creation of the new Students and Early Career Development (SECD) Sector, ASMEs stab und sttze of engineering workforce development is evident through the Sectors vision to become a gateway of choice for engineering students and early career engineers to build a successful professional career in engineering enabled by sustained engagement in ASME over all career stages. The need for student development in engineering and science, particularly in STEM-related programs, has never been greater and was the topic of the Ralph Coats Roe Luncheon Lecture presented by Dr. Wayne Clough, secretary, The Smithsonian Institution. We must commit ourselves as a nation to bring science back into the public dia logue, said Clough, who also commended ASME for its efforts in professional development, advocacy and leadership training programs. ASME continues to spotlight the talents and contributions of young engineers through competitions like the ASME Innovation Showcase (IShow), developed by ASME and sponsored by the ASME Foundation, to foster and promote creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit within the next generation of engineering and innovation leaders. To read mora about this years IShow, please visit https//www.asme.org/about-asme/news/asme-news/university-michigans-turtlecell-takes-top-honors.As ASME looks to the future, the establishment of ASMEs Pathway 2025 has set in motion a framework for creating an expanding and vital ASME for the 21st century as the Society increases its global presences in places like China, India, Europe and Latin America. At the same time, ASME continues to establish new international working groups for codes, standards and certification, building on its strong reputation as a global standards leader. Contributing to ASMEs outreach to the broader engineering community is the recent redesign of ASME.org, which now includes community-focused features allowing users to create personal profiles and network with other engineers with like-minded interests in ASMEs global community. The website, with its new social networking features, continues to flourish as the online face of ASME and the epicenter for engineering conversations and information. All ASME members and other members of the STEM community are invited to visit ASME.org, register for a free Participant Profile, and take part in the engineering and STEM-related discussions taking place on the various ASME Groups pages on the site.ASME also continues its enthusiastic support for Engineering for Change, which currently has over 14,000 members from all corners of the globe. Board of Governors members-at-large nominees included Urmila Ghia, John Goossen and John Touhy. President Kotb sees a bright future for the engineering profession and for the Society as it expands its influence in the global marketplace. This is such an exciting time to be a part of ASME. The changes weve seen and those that are still in the works are making ASME stronger and more relevant than ever, said Kotb.

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Big Career Change

5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Big Career Change 5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Making a Big Career Change But is tzu siche some secret guiding them? Not at all. Like many women making a drastic change in their lives, they struggle with the unknown.Few of us make these decisions lightly. Some of the things you may weigh before making the change could include factoring in what you will lose or at least, what you think you may lose. Here are five questions you should ask yourself before pulling the trigger on a life-altering careerdecision.1. Why Change Your Life and Start a New Career? Why not be happy? Youve been in the same position long enough to see the company change, and you are no longer satisfied with your job. This is what tipped the scale for my friends- Your role changedA friend of mine was bumped to another section. One minute, shes leading a multimillion-dollar growth manahme at a company worth $40 billion the next, shes assigned to the tedium of the co rporate strategy unit because hercompany lacked a culture of experimentation. She knew her value and quickly started the job search, receiving offers from both Twitter and Facebook. She is now enjoying her new role as a product manager at the latter.- You deservecareer advancementAnother one of my friends felt that her small team did not allow for growth. She wrestled with moving out of EdTech, and only after months of soul-searching and career coaching did she find a perfect fit as an interactive producer for an advertising agency.- Youre seeking a challengeOne of my friends reached the top of the ranks and was running the place like a champ, but she became bored with the minutia. She craved something more creative. Rather than taking a similar type of job with Pandora, she opted for a pay cut and now serves as a project manager for a highly-regarded agency with clients like Netflix, Amazon, and Google.- Youre in the wrong industryTwo friends, after years of law school and big firm work, found themselves in what was (for them) the wrong career. One went directly into nursing school, while the other lived off of her savings, taking time off to find the right job and is now director of development for a solar energy company.- You need a better environmental fitA different friends favorite boss left, leaving a management void in an already negative company culture. She left to spend a year at home with her two youngkids before landing a program management position at an innovative technology company. The result? I can assure you that none of them have ever looked back.2. What Matters Most in Your Career? Here are some common answers Ive seen- FlexibilityYou like the prospect of having more time to travel or work on personal projects.- LearningYoure looking for new challenges.- OwnershipYou want work that matches your need for a sense of fulfillment. We want money, yes, but we also want jobs that suit our lifestyles which could mean fewer hours, nicer people, more freedom of choice, childcare on site, and anything else that will make us happy.Other things to considering include Do you have the support of your significant other? Are you planning on conceiving soon? Adopting? Freezing eggs? Remaining childless? Considering what all of these things mightmean to you and your career, taking stock of themcan contribute to your decision. We tend to feel more at ease when our personal and professional lives exist together in harmony.3. What Am I Afraid Of?Many are afraid of leaving a career theyre good at, the short-term financial insecurity, the lost camaraderie of current workplace friends, or having to start over at the bottom. Rest assured, however, that virtuallyallof these fears are experienced by confident women who make successful career transitions. One such woman, Gazelle Javantash, says, Considering how much I spent on my education and a masters degree, I told myself I couldnt start at entry level with this much debt. So I hired a career c oach.Through this process, Gazelle moved from education into the private tech sector. Her coach helped her to weigh all of these questions and identify therole she wanted her career to play in her life.4. What Do I Have to Gain? The answer to this question is different for everyone. Maybe your desire for a career change comes from career and personal satisfaction, or you anticipate thisnew role giving youmorefree time, or this new direction provides the financial boost to start saving for retirement or a home. In any case, confident women who make career transitions know that doing so alwaysrequires a leap of faith.5. How Do I Ultimately Decide What to Do?How did all of these powerful women in my life come to the decision to pick up their padfolios and hit the road? We talked to our partners, and we talked to each other. Most of us, in fact, had been thinking about jumping ship for months. We would casually mention the idea in passing over a glass of wine, in the pool, on an airplan e, or while hiking up a mountain. We listened to one another, helped each other weigh all of the pros and cons, asked ourselves what we had to lose, and then finally deliveredour recommendations to one another.Ultimately, no one else can make the decision for you. Everyone will give you advice and try to help, but in the end, you are the only one who truly knows whats right for you. In your heart, you will know when its time for a change. The final decision will not be easy. Its never easy to choose the road less traveled and dive into something new. While change is scary, you know in your gedeihlich when its necessary.Once you do decide to takethat first step, dont look back. We did it, and you can, too.-This article originally appeared on BusinessCollective.Heather McGough is cofounder, with Eric Ries and Melissa Moore, ofLean Startup Company. Related Articles Around the Web Scou t RFP One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 1000000 construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to of fer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel neuerung/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income P otential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentierung technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.
